Gannon/Kilkenny families in County Leitrim

Post by sgannon »

I am researching the Gannon and Kilkenny families of County Leitrim and would be interested in any information. This is what I know: Bernard Gannon married Ellen Kilkenny on February 28, 1870 in the Church of Angharann (sp?) after which they emigrated to the USA, to Summit, New Jersey. Bernard's father was James Gannon. Bernard had at least one brother, Patrick, who married Mary Anne Lannan. James' parents were Owen Gannon and Ellen Gannon. These Gannons lived in the townland of Corracreeny. Owen is shown on land records in 1821 in Corracreeny; James on the same land in 1854. James had a sister, Anne Gannon, who was born in 1812. After 1870 there is no record I can find of any Gannons in the area. Ellen Kilkenny was from Bundarragh. Her father was John Kilkenny and her mother was Ellen. She had at least one brother, Peter, who married Mary Sheridan on November 29, 1860. I believe some of the Kilkennys are still in Bundarragh.

Bernard married Ellen in Aughavas church on 28th Feb 1870. Winesses were Eugene McCew and Margaret McEntyre. This would have been Ellen's parish.

I cannot find any trace of the birth of Ellen or Peter unless you are wrong about her mother's name. There is an Elinor baptised 24th October 1848 to John Kilkenny and Ann McEntyre (Note the McEntyre connection above!) I won't find Peter's baptism as he will have been born before 1845 when parish records start.

I would be interested where you got the date of Peter's marriage to Mary Sheridan as I don't have that in my notes.

I do have some notes of Peter's children: Ellen (?) 4th Dec 1862; Maryann 13th May 1864; Bridget 26th Feb 1866; John 21st May 1868; Francis 8th Aug 1869; Catherine 28th Apr 1872; Peter 3rd May 1874; Rose 8th Feb 1876. Also a Sarah born c. 1879.

The 1901 Census shows Peter aged 58, Mary (57) with daughter Sarah aged 22 at Bundarragh.
