cassidy

Post by sharon123 »

can anyone out there help me in my quest to find my cassidy ancestors. i have an ambrose cassidy born in leitrim in around 1830ish it shows him at ummera, inishmagrath in griffiths and on the 1901 census it looks like the cassidys were still there, but i dont know what it is a farm or whatever and i dont know if it still exists and where the nearest recognisable place is as i cant find it on a modern map, any help would be appreciated i have tried on other sites for help but dont get any response.

For details of Ummera townland see the townland index on this website. Note there are two townlands named Ummera in County Leitrim.

For the general location of Inishmagrath Civil parish and Inishmagrath Catholic parish see the map pages on this website.

LDS film 846361 shows the change of occupiers of Ummera townland from Griffith’s Valuation to c1929.

LDS film 256619 lists occupiers at the 1834 Tithe Applotment.

The Ordnance Survey 1:50000 Discovery series map Number 26 shows the location of Ummera townland. It is approx. NE of Drumkerran town - about 3 miles north of Lake Allen.

Hello Sharon,
The townland of Ummera is near Dowra and Drumkeerin on a modern map. A townland is just a division of farmland. Ummera is on a hill overlooking Lough Allen.
I am also the descendant of one of the few Cassidy families in Inishmagrath Parish, but haven't been able to tie my family to this one yet.
I suggest that you join the yahoo group:drumkeeranfolk,

One of our members is also a descendant of Ambrose Cassidy
( sorry but I can't recall who it is right now)so you are very close to finding cousins and more information.
