Johnston/McMorrow

Post by Mary Gouger »

My grt grt grandfather John Johnston b. 1834 Sligo(?) married Mary McMorrow - six children Delia, Ellen, Marie, Patrick, Anne b 1872, John b. 1874 (Dromahaire) Co. Leitrim. Wife Mary died before 1882 and he married again to Bedelia Dolan - two children James b 1882, Elizabeth (Lizzie) b 1884.
1886 John and Bedelia immigrated to North America with the 8 children. They lived in Ohio and then Buffalo, NY.
John and Mary's 6 children were baptised in Kilanummery parish between 1868 and 1877. Looking for info on marriage dates, places, birth/baptismal dates for all children and parents and siblings of both John Johnston and Mary McMorrow.

Anyone have any connection to this family?

Mary,
Griffith's Land Valuation of 1857 lists 3 John Johnstons as occupiers of land in the Parish of Kilanummery (they could all be the same person or different ones). They are listed in the townlands of Creevelea, Friarstown, and Sradoon. There are many Dolans and McMorrows in this immediate area.

The Leitrim Genealogy Center lists a marriage record (it could just be the Banns of Marriage) for a John Johnston and B Dolan in 1880. You have to pay to get records from them if you have no luck elsewhere: http://homepage.eircom.net/~leitrimgenealogy/

Because your family settled in Buffalo, which is the home of the moderator of drumkeeranfolk@yahoogroups.com, it might be appropriate for you to join that group which is focused primarily on the parishes just south of Kilanummery; Killarga & Inishmagrath, but sometimes there is a spillover of information.
Good luck
Sharon

Sharon,
Thank you so such for the information. I'll follow up on it.
I have been searching my surname for months ( over 200 hours on the internet) in Co Tyrone with no luck - nada. I just started on this line and am excited about getting some leads already. I've been doing my genealogy for over 20 years but just started last year using the internet since I have to search in foreign countries now.
Thank you again.
