Loughglynn Parish Church - Roscommon

We were over to Ireland last month and visited LoughGlynn parish church. At least I believe it was the RC parish church, but there was no signage at all. Could someone confirm that the church on the main road into the town is the parish church. It had a small cemetery beside it and what looked to be the Priest's house at the back, but no one was home!
Thanks for your help. My Flanagan ancestor appears to be baptised there in 1817.

Hello Heather --The church is Our Lady of Good Council.
I was there in 1999.The priest at the time was FR. O'Rrouke[not very friendly].If you write send it to the P.O.in Loughglynn.
They will get it to the church.

Fr John O'Rourke is still in situ at the church, I telephoned him just two weeks ago - he was fine, quite friendly but not particularly helpful referring me to either the LDS or Roscommon heritage centre if I wanted to search records.
Mary Skelly who runs the Roscommon heritage centre is helpful and will underake searches for you - you cannot visit the centre to search records yourself because they are in such a frail state that they wish to protect them. See their site: http://www.irish-roots.net/roscommon.asp

Castman--Fr. O'rouke,s sister runs the rectory.She allowed
me to look at the church records after I showed her my
grandmothers birth certificate [Winefred Callaghan].When
Fr. O'Rouke came home and found me looking looking through
"HIS BOOKS" he closed all of them and would not allow me to look further.I contacted the Roscommon Heritage Centre a few
years ago.They did reserch for me at a reasonable rate.They put a booklet together, with a nice cover.I had copies made
last year for my family.

Terri - I spoke to his sister on the phone, she seemed very nice - being a protestant I made the classic mistake of asking her if she was Mrs O'Rourke!!! - she saw the funny side...I think. She seems to like the idea of dropping her brother in it a bit. She told me I should call back and speak to John because he does let people see the records...when I did he wasn't so keen and refrred me to the Heritage centre or "Them Mormons". but I did discover that he was on holiday the weekend I went over.

Was just reading your above posting, and happened to see the reference to "Callaghan". I should point out that there are many of "us" both here on this bulletin board and elsewhere that are pretty deep into the Callaghan research from the civil parish of Tibohine. I have quite a large archive of collected Callaghan data. If you are interested, write back and I'll email you as much as is practical in those areas where you may not already have copies of what I have.

Additionally, you can click on the little "Search" icon at the top of this page and enter "Finn AND Callaghan" which will put you into an exchange with a few other members of this bulletin board who are researching Callaghan in the same area as you and I. Of course you can also do a search on just Callaghan and get a much larger list, however much of it will be from the old archives of this bulletin board. Unfortunately many of those posters were using email addresses that are no longer valid.

Terri: We have corresponded in the past and I believe you are one of my very few connections to the Callaghans who came out of Lisdrumneil. My grandfather Cormack was a brother of your John Callaghan who married Winnie Regan. Other siblings to Cormack and John were Martin, Patrick and Mary. Parents were Cormack Callaghan and Mary Wier. I would very much llike to reconnect with you either through this bulletin board or directly at jblanchard@rcn.com.

By the way, I was at Our Lady of Good Council in May. Also looked through the records at Sacred Heart in Fairymount.

Just wondering if the following information may be of help to you. My grandmother is buried with her grandparents in an old graveyard a couple of miles or so outside Loughglynn (no church there). It is called Killroddann and recently I contacted a person, someone from this site, that was researching Giblin and Flanagan names. He told me some of his Flanagan relatives were buried in the same cemetry and actually owned the land beside it. If you go to the surname database on this site and type in Flanagan, you should find him; I have a photograph of the graveyard, if you would like a copy please contact me.
