Is MANES an Irish name?

It is true that MacLysaght does not list Manes. Further, the Rep. of Ireland phonebook doesn't have any of that name. (The North of Ireland phonebook is not on-line nor do I have a CD-ROM.) However, there are 3 people called Mains in Dublin and a Mains Hotel in Killarney. Neither are your most likely candidates. The most likely possibility is the skip of a bureaucrat's pen or your ancestor's which caused Manus to become Manes; one simple letter. There are 128 Manus and 652 McManus in the Republic. Other possibilities such as Manis, McManes and Mane are all zero. So, my guess is Manus/McManus. You'll have to find a paper trail. Good Luck!
Re: Is MANES an Irish name?
Happen to have a phonebook for Northern Ireland ! I see there are plenty of McManus and two McMains. I also see the surnames Mann,Mannis and Mones. Hope this may be of some help and good luck in your search.
