Re: RUDDY FAMILY

I have two Ruddy connections in my family...
sisters who married brothers, all from around
Breaffy, Ballina, Co Mayo. My g-g-grandfather,
John "Jackie Mór" Naughton married Margaret
"Peggy" Ruddy/Reddy, and his brother Thomas
married Peggy's sister Barbara "Babby". Thomas
and Barbara were married Feb 5, 1864. I don't
have a marriage date for Jackie and Peggy, but
probably around 1860. If anything sounds familiar,
drop me a note.

Re: RUDDY FAMILY

Post by William Ruddy »

The following info was sent to me by a Neil Ruddy from Houston, Texas. Myself (William) live outside of Philadelphia, Pa. near Lancaster, Pa.. My roots trace back to the 1880 census in Baltimore, Maryland where Austin and Ellen Ruddy landed in Baltimore (I think). The 1880 census shows Austin and Ellen as Reddys and then the 1900 census shows the same folks as Ruddys. Common first names include, John, Thomas, William,Francis, Austin, Mary, Margaret, and Patrick.
The Ruddys are located in the most northern tip of Ireland, a penninsula called Innishowen in County Donegal. If you were to visit and tell them your name is Ruddy, I suspect you would eat free for two weeks! 8^) As a Ruddy, I am obviously prejudiced, but they are very loyal to their families and friends, hard working, fairly intelligent, and very Catholic. I think family loyalty is probably their greatest characteristic. And like most Irishmen, we talk too much, ... and usually at the same time!!
I have never researched this, but I am not aware of any Ruddys in the other parts of Ireland. The family is spread all over the world, but New York and Philadelphia are very well represented. I live in Houston.
I know they came to the USA in the 1850/60's. My grandfather arrived about 1880 and stayed with an Uncle in Brooklyn. The earlier group had apparently done well, they even had a doctor and a lawyer in the family in such a short period of time.
I hope the above helps. I am surprised you haven't contacted Chris Ruddy, the columnist/author, or Albert Ruddy, the movie producer (Godfather). Chris has several pages.
Regards,
Neil Reddy
