Apr 8, 1998 - 15:28 - From: - Michael.McManus@durham.ac.uk
Name: Rose and Peter McManus, Leicester, England
E-mail address: Michael.McManus@durham.ac.uk
Ireland Interest -- County Roscommon
Subdivision: Kilronan, Dereenadooey, Ballyfarnan From: 1800 To: 1850
Notes: About 10 years ago my husband Peter McManus decided to do something about tracing his roots. We are both originally from Hartlepool on
the north east coast of England. Peter had absolutely nothing to go on except that his father had said the family had an Irish background. After
many soul-destroying years, in which any sane person would have given up, he did eventually trace his great grandfather, Martin McManus. Martin
had stated in a document that he had been born in Ireland - but he did not state the county or locality. Peter also managed to trace several other
family members, including Martin's 4 brothers; Thomas, Patrick, James and Dominic and also 1 sister, Dorothy, and their parents Dominic McManus
and Jane Conlon. Dominic and Jane had married in Ireland and left for England with their 6 children during the potato famine.
Unable to get any further back Peter decided to trace the families of Martin's brothers and sister who had married in England - and that is where I
come into the story. I was English through and through - or so I thought. But Martin (the one Peter is descended from) had a younger brother,
Patrick, who married twice. His second wife was Ellen Kelly who had several children, one of whom was called Catherine. Catherine married
William Keely and they had a daughter Rose Ann who married John Ferry and they also had a daughter called Rose Ann - my mother. So both
Peter and I can trace our families back to the same Dominic and Jane McManus born in Ireland. It's a small world isn't it? To continue my
story......... from our friend Michael in Durham we heard about the first McManus Clan Gathering in Ireland and, on the spur of the moment we
decided to attend. We rang the organizer, Betty McManus, and enquired about arrangements - Betty said we would be very welcome and just to
turn up, so that's just what we did. It was during this weekend, whilst talking to the local McManuses in the bar of Paddy and Betty's hostelry, that
we met Joseph McManus, Betty's cousin. Joseph showed us some lists of McManuses he had received from a Michael McManus in Durham.
When we looked through them we couldn't believe our luck! There they were, our Dominic and Jane and their children all baptised in Kilronan,
Roscommon. And these in lists from our friend back in Durham, only a few miles away from our home! As Peter was so excited about our fateful
and interesting find, neither of us got much sleep that night.
To cut a long story short, we have returned to Ireland several times since that time in order to piece together more segments of our family jigsaw.
And we have now traced the actual family-home where Dominic lived in the townland of Dereenadooey in Ardcarne parish, North Roscommon.
Part of the original stone cottage is still standing, although each year there is less and less of it to see. But best of all, we have found a present-day
Michael McManus still living on the land. Michael is the only one left and he has built himself another house on the land only about a mile from the
original cottage. Now every year we visit Michael and all our other friends, especially Betty and Paddy McManus in Drumshanbo. We'd be pleased
to make any other family connections which anyone can make.
Rose McManus, Leicester, England
