Irish speakers in vicinity of Tulsk

Post by Hugh Doyle »

How prevalent was the Irish language in the vicinity of Tulsk, in Roscommon, in the early 1800s? My g-g-grandfather was born in 1825, near Tulsk, and I'm trying to determine if he might have spoken Irish, as well as English. Thanks,......Hugh Doyle.

Probably prevalent based on my observations of 1901 census returns which shows that persons aged 80 and over claimed ability to speak Irish even though many of them also stated they could not read or write.
