Britton family

Post by Hobart B. Hughes »

My ggg grandfather was born on June 23, 1795 in County Leitrim,Parish of Rossenvor, Townland of Park and emigrated to Canada in 1817 with his mother,a brother and three sisters. They landed in St. Johns, New Brunswick. His father was named James Britton and his mother was Letitia Hewitt.I have been unable to find any record of the family in County Leitrim but my search has disclosed that there were many Brittons in County Tipperary in the 1600's and old letters that the family has kept indicates that they were cattle men. The name is derived from de Bretagne or le Breton in Brittany. Has anyone run across this family in County Leitrim? Any help will be sincerely appreciated.
