GAFFNEY/KEADUE/COUNTY ROSCOMMON

Post by George Hoyt »

Would like to communicate with anyone researching the GAFFNEY name, who lived on the DERREENAVICARA Townland which is southeast of the village of Keadue, in the very northern part of County Roscommon.
Specifically, Thomas Gaffney married Anne Mattimo on March 3, 1859 as recorded in church records. They had eight children, the oldest being Patrick Gaffney (my grandfather) who was born February 10, 1860, and the youngest Paul Gaffney who was born June 15, 1877. Patrick Gaffney lived on the DERREENAVICARA Townland, and raised his family of nine children (two sons and seven daughters). My mother Elizabeth Gaffney, was the youngest and came to the USA in 1928.
If this information connects to any DERREENAVICARA GAFFNEY that you are researching, please contact me by E-Mail at: GW GE Hoyt@aol.com
Sincerely,
George Hoyt

That is the next townsland southeast of Derreenargan Townland (toward Lietrim Town). Her father was born abt. 1841 in Drumboylan Townsland: Michael Gaafry (marriage certificate: 7 Feb. 1869, Cootehall, Co Roscommon) Michael Gaffrey (death certificate: 4 June 1917, Drumboylan Townsland). His father was Thomas Willaim Gaffery (born before 1857, married to Mary Elizabeth O'Brien. Do you feel there is any relationship to the information you have?
I believe the center of the two townslands are only about 1.5 miles apart. I have been researching Gaffrey's from the area of Drumboylan. I have found many spellings that are on official documents for the same family and vary greatly. These include: Gaffrey, Gaffney, Gaafry, Caffrey and others.
A reply to my email address too would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Bill McDermott
She married a Coen from Boyle, who then resided at Derrenine. I do recall my grandmother saying that there were Gaffney connections in both Derrenargan and Drumboylan. I don't know what the connections are, however.
