My great-great grandmother was Annia Nora Gately, born
in somewhere in County Roscommon on March 8, 1848. She
and her family emigrated to the US in October 1865 and
she married a "Yankee" by the name of William Rogers
Williams and lived thenceforth in Holyoke, MA. She was
married on May 6, 1868 in St. Jerome Parish in Holyoke
although when I wrote to them they had no marriage
record for her. She was also said to be buried in the
Parish cemetery although they had no record of that,
either. I want to find out where in Roscommon she may
have come from. Her parents were Peter Gately and
Bridget Miley Gately, who is said to have come from
County Longford. She died in Holyoke, MA in Sept. 1932
and I cannot seem to find out where she was married or
buried. St. Jerome's is the oldest Catholic Parish in
Holyoke. All the others post-date her marriage date. I
would appreciate any help that anyone can give me in
trying to locate where in Ireland she was born, grew
up and where she may have emigrated to the US from. She
was supposed to have come over in steerage and my mom
says she landed in Portsmouth, MA but there is no town
in MA by that name. There is Portsmouth, NH but that
didn't seem like a very likely port that Irish emigres
would have come through. I contacted the courthouse in
Portsmouth, NH and they could find nothing on my family
ever landing in Portsmouth. A deceased relative is said
to have found their landing information, but a lot of
good that does me as that relative has been dead for a
very long time and no one else seems to know where the
Gately's made landfall here in the US. If anyone can
help me out here I would be terribly grateful! One more
bit of helpful info: There were six children in the
Gately family: Mary, Sarah, Annia Nora (my great-great
grandmother), Katherine, Peter and Patrick. The whole
family emigrated at once to the US and there are no
doubt relatives of Annia's siblings out there who may
recognise these names. If you are one of them, please
contact me at once!!! I'd be very eager to talk to you
and hear if you know of anything that I may be looking
for!! Thank you so very much for your time!!
-Sally Burnell
Kent, OH, USA
sburnell@raex.com
