Tighes of Co. Westmeath

Post by Sian M. Lindsey-Allison »

My grandfather was James Tighe, b. 13 Sep 1905 in Ballinalack, Co. Westmeath, Ireland. His parents were Peter and Julia Tighe (nee Murphy - she was born in Ballynacargy, Co. Westmeath). The family lived in Ballinalack and were known as the "Tighes of the Bog" because they lived near the bog. My grandfather had siblings - Bridget Tighe b. 17 Sep 1907 (d. 1912); Peter Joseph Tighe, b. 31 Dec 1908; Julia Tighe b. 5 July 1911; and he spoke of a brother "Kit" (we think that's short for Christopher) but we have not been able to find a brith/death/baptismal record for him so we don't know if this was actually a brother or some other family member. My grandfather only told a few stories of Ireland, other than that he never spoke of the place or of his family. He said his mother died in childbirth (though we could find no death certificate for her through 1920) with a female child (which couldn't have been Bridget because she died in 1912 but the year before that, in 1911, Julia had had another child and had to have been alive to register that birth on 18 August - her signature is on the form). After his mother died he said he went to live in Killucan with a Gibney family, working on their farm until he was old enough to go to England (we guess that would be c. 1922), which he did. He married my grandma (Irene Watson) in Coventry, England, where they lived until he died on 6 Sep 1957. He and my gran had two children, Sandra Mernie Tighe b. 28 Jan 1941 (my mother) and Jimmy Tighe (my uncle) b. 21 Mar 1948. My gran, mom and uncle are all still alive, my gran's here in England and my mom and dad are in the US.
I went to Ireland in December and found a Kitty Tighe in Streete (Co. Westmeath) whose father told her he was my grandfather's cousin, but her line is known as the "Tighes of Streete".... not my "Tighes of the Bog", unfortunately.
If any of these people sound like your people or if you have any further information on this line of Tighes, please contact me! Thanks!
