HESTER emigrated<br>from the townland of Ballybroghan, near Tulsk in about 1846. With their<br>five children in tow, they eventually settled in the anthracite coal<br>region of eastern Pennsylvania, and Owen and his four sons found<br>employment in the mines. His daughter, Bridget, married John BOYLE and<br>moved from PA to LaSalle, IL. In my research, I have discovered that<br>many PA anthracite (hard) coal miners frequently moved back and forth<br>between PA and LaSalle, presumably to find work in the LaSalle-area<br>bituminous (soft) coal mines when work was scarce in PA. I was not<br>aware that the canal work was still going on during the 1850-1870s<br>period. Can you tell me more about that?<p> At any rate, the PA - LaSalle route was well-worn by Irish<br>immigrant coal miners during that period. There was something about the<br>LaSalle/Peru region that was especially enticing to them, and I'm not<br>yet sure what it was.<p>All the best,..........Hugh Doyle.
