my great great great grand father was called james mcgarry<br>his father was a carriage maker and was married to matilda livy ...james came to england around the time of the famine and married in 1846 jane sly he had 2 brothers thomas and john anyone with any info on either the john snr or the sons would be greatfully recieved records office in london suggested griffiths directory but where can i find one???

: my great great great grand father was called james mcgarry and came to england around 1845 .... his father was called john and was married to matilda livy around 1800s john was a carriage maker his son james a gun smith... james lived in the snow hill area of birmingham he had at least 3 sons thomas and john..and my gg father james..i have hit a brick wall with reguards to where in Ireland he came from although family ledgend has it that he came from roscommon . certainly the name ross appears in subsequent family christian names. any ideas on where i can go from here. <br>

I haven't much to tell you, except that you might be on the right track. My great-grandmother, Mary Ellen (Nellie) Cox was born and raised in Carrick-on-Shannon. Her maternal grandmother was Brigid McGarry, who married Michael McGushin and had at least two children. Simply by calculating the generations, I've determined that she was likely born about 1820-1830. She may be a cousin to James McGarry or otherwise related. I have yet to begin research on the McGushins and the McGarrys, beyond family history passed down through my grandmother and great aunts. Maybe I'll be able to help you more eventually!

[William McGarry]

My great grandfather was James McGarry of Croghan, Co. Rosscommon. He was born in 1811 and died in 1879. He is buried in the churchyard of the Church of Ireland in Croghan. There might be a connection. I would gladly share any information I have.<br>
