I am seeking the parents and siblings of John O'Beirne and Bridget Kenny, who emigrated from around Elphin in 1846. It was said that Bridget's father was arranging an unwanted match for her. John and Bridget were passengers on the Stephen L. Whitney, arriving in New York City. They married immediately and went to Danielson and Hampton in eastern Connecticut.
Their death certificates show that John's parents were Martin and Rose and Bridget's father was named Michael. John apparently had two sisters who came to America: Sarah and Mary Ann. Sarah married a Flannery; Mary Ann married Michael Regan. Both marriages took place in Connecticut. Sarah and Mary Ann were about 20 years younger than John. No siblings of Bridget are known. Family lore says there were cousins who remained in New York City.
John and Bridget had 3 sons in Connecticut: Martin, Michael, and John.
I have a large lovely portrait picture of Bridget at the age of 60 or 70.
Their surname became Burns in America.
John's Intention to Naturalize said he came from Elphin and was born around Aug. 1, 1826. Much of my search in Ireland has centered around Ballinameen. I would very much appreciate some help. Thank you.
Mary Lee Dunn
O'Beirne and Kenny, Elphin
Re: O'Beirne and Kenny, Elphin
There was a Beirne's Garage on Main street, Elphin, Roscommon for many years. I think the owner have changed hands. The previous owners were related to me on my fathers side. My Grandmother was an O'Beirne. The owners of the garage were my fathers first cousins. When my family imigrated to the USA they drove us to Cobh to catch the ship back in 1926.
John Furey
