Ballinaglera

Post by Gail Moran »

Where is this area of Co Leitrim? My ancestors, the Cafferty and McTeague [McTage] families came from the north of Ireland and first settled in Ballinaglera about 1820. I would love to hear more about the reasons for their journey into Leitrim and their place of origin in the north. I know they were Irish speakers, and may have come from Donegal or Antrim. In later years, the family lived in several areas of Aughnasheelin.

Ballinagleragh sits on the eastern side of Lough Allen in the southwestern part of Co. Leitrim. If you find the city of Sligo on a map, look a little south east of it to find the lake. It may not be on all maps because it's not very large, but Drumshanbo often is on maps--and Ballinagleragh is about 18 miles north of Drumshanbo. Some of my family visited Ireland last summer, and when they mentioned they were going to Co. Leitrim people would say, "You must have family from there." Apparently there's no real other reason to go. It's mostly small towns and farmland.
