Making the Leap

Post by Tom Dyer »

It's been real difficult finding my Leitrim ancestors before the
early 1800's. I seem to be stopped at the 1833 Tithe Books.
I've heard from others that they also have had this problem.
Does anyone have any advice about how to find more info
before this time. My Dyer/Dwyer ancestors where never numerous
in Leitrim. So, I've hit this brick wall.
Some thoughts I've had where:
To look at the patent letters in the early 1600's.
Has anyone done this??
Look for estate records for the landlords of my ancestors
homes.
Any other suggestions???
Thanks,
Tom

More records were fround by starting a Society for the Parish in Leitrim. By doing so you will center on the families that were 'neighbors' of your ancestors. Together more records will be found! The 1600 records will only show the folks who lands were taken and to whom were given them. The 200 year gag between 1650 and 1830 is vast. The Estate papers is a fine start as well as any court papers from events within the parish, but also work with others who are looking in the same parish for other surnames. The Ballykilcline Society (for Kilglass parish,Co. Roscommon is less than 2 years old, but we have found much together as a group! I think this is the best research method of the future, Tom.
Thanks for the advice. This is a good idea. I'm going to look at the landlords records
today. Hopefully, it will fill in some gaps.
As I go along I'm find more people from Kiltubrid parish.
Your right there would be more strength in numbers.
Thanks,
Tom
