My wife and I, with our two daughters, are travelling to Ireland for the first time in April/May 1999. We're 4th and 5th generation Australians and have never been to Ireland before. We're looking for some native guidance on what to see in Rosscommon and the rest of Ireland. My mother tells me my Great Grandfather Richard McGreevy and his wife originated in Rosscommon. They left Ireland in the 1880's. Appreciate any info on this.

Re: Sydney to Ireland
If there's still time:
See Mandy Toolan at King House in Boyle who will help alert you to the McGreevy Family Reunion the weekend of 20 August 2000 in Moylurg Territory. She can give you a copy of the family history at a reasonable price.
Down the street, Lionel Knott will tell you all about our plans.
My gr gr grandfather, Patrick Henry McGreevy, was baptized in 1815 in the parish church at Croghan. Many McGreevy's came from that area.
Meet Bernie McGreevy Walsh, who with her husband Peter, rents pleasure and fishing boats on the Lough Key.
Stay, instead of the Abbey Hotel, at Glencarne B&B, managed by Mrs Harrington, hard by the Ardcarne Cemetery, where the McGreevy bodies are buried in great number.
Dinner at the Blue Moon Rest. in Boyle would not be a mistake.
And note that Ireland's President is a McGreevy, too, with origins in Killukin townland.
If you read one book, make it "Woodbrook," by David Thomson, as many McGreevy's worked through the years on that Anglo-Irish estate.
Do all this, and you will know more than most.

: : : : According to MacLysaght, the McGreevy's were once "a Sept of importance in mediaeval times.
