Researching Mother's Lineage (French)

Post by Daniel M. Stalling »

Good day,
I am doing some research into my Mother's lineage and happened onto your email address through the "Leitrim-Roscommon Surname Search Engine." I have traced my Mother's family back to Cheshire County, New Hampshire, USA and am trying to find anything that would take this further back. Several French's migrated to the New England area in the 100 years prior to the last records that I have on my Mother's line. I thought perhaps you might have some information on this.
MOTHER’S FAMILY LINE
Daniel M. Stalling

If you use the Surname Search facility on this site you will find a number of people researching the Roscommon French family. It might be an idea to mail them, they may be able to help.
The best known French (sometimes spelled Ffrench) family from Roscommon would be the very eminent family of Lord de Freyne whose family name was French and who gave the name to Frenchpark where the family seat was based. One of the family, I believe, founded the Canadian Mounted Police. They are no longer based there, but the family are still around and I am sure their heritage will be well documented.
There was also Percy French from Clooneyquinn (who may have been a branch of above family). He was famous as a songwriter and many of those Irish songs we know and love such as The Mountains of Mourne, Slatterys Mounted Fut, and Come Back Paddy Reilly to Ballyjamesduff were written by him. His life is also well documented.
John
