I have been reading an article in a genealogy magazine on the Revenue
Police. I knew there were Revenue Police in the towns of Boyle, Roscommon and Strokestown at Griffith's Valuation, but did not know their role.
After reading the article I now know the Revenue Police existed in Ireland from 1830 to 1857. Their role was to combat the making of malt and the distillation of spirit in Ireland in contravention of
the Irish Illicit Distillation (Ireland) Act of 1831.
Record of service for members of the force can be examined at the Public Records Office (PRO) Kew, London. (See file CUST 111).
CUST 111 contains information on appointments to, and details of service of the members in the force. Available are dates of appointment and retirement, the circumstances of his retirement and where he served during his service.
The PRO website is http://www.pro.gov.uk/
