Dolan of Oran

Post by John Mc Dermot »

Hi Ronnie
I saw your note on Thomas Dolen and his wife.
I don't know how much you know about this family;
I don't really know how extensive it is in that
area myself. I cannot place Lissanisky either,
though there are several townlands beginning
with Lis- in the area. My great grandfather,
on my mother's side, was James Dolan
(the spelling is immaterial)from Castleruby near
Tulsk, which is north of Oran. He married
Winifred Carlos of Lisheen, near Castleplunkett.
The Dolan family is in this district at the time
of the 1748 Census of the Diocese of Elphin,
of which this district is part. I have not yet
turned my attention to the these families in much
depth. What were the circumstances of the murder,
do you know?

I am researching a Margaret Gertrude DOLAN who arrived in Australia in the late 1800's as a young girl. She arrived with her
sisters Mary & Anne DOLAN from Ireland via New Zealand.
Another three sisters stayed in Ireland.
Her parents were Thomas DOLAN and Jane McINERNEY who were from Roscommon. Thomas was a Peat Farmer.

Lissanisky

Post by Pete Dorsey »

Lissanisky is the name of a townland in Oran, although I don't know exactly were it is situated in the parish, although I'm told there is or was a National School located there, founded in 1896. There also appears to be a small village called Lissanisky in St. John's parish, Barony Athlone, just east of Lough Funcheon. Our family records indicate that one of our ancestors came from Lissanisky, Co. Roscommon, but I'm not sure which. I'm searching for Dorsey (or Darcey, Dorcey etc.) and Rourke. Would appreciate anythhing you find out about either Lissanisky. I wonder if the murder had been covered by newspapers such as the "Roscommon Herald" from Boyle, assuming it goes back that far. Hope to hear from you.
Pete Dorsey
