Ancestors in Ballinlough

Post by Patricia Knight-Arndt »

My first cousin once removed, Margaret Raftery, was born (c. 1870) in Lowberry, Ballinlough, County Roscommon, Clogher Townland. She came to New York to live with her sister, Ellen Kane. When Ellen died, Margaret returned to Ireland where she married Michael Greene, and lived in his house in Ballinlough. They had 7 children: Mary, Margaret, James, Joseph, Bernard, Anne and Michael. After her husband's death (he is buried in the cemetery in Garranlahan, County Roscommon) Margaret and young Michael came to live with her daughters--Mary, Margaret (d. 1990) and Anne (d. 1992) --in White Plains, New York. Margaret died there in 1957. Her son, Michael, died in Ireland in 1988 while visiting relatives in Ballinlough and was buried in the cemetery in Garranlahan. Margaret's sister, Anne (c. 1872) married Michael Winston in Ballinlough. They lived in England, but died in Ireland and are buried there. They had two children, Mary and Austin, of whom we know nothing.
re: "They had two children, Mary and Austin, of whom we know nothing."
I may be able to help with this part, I hope.
My grandfather was Owen Gormley (d.1946?) of Castle Quarter in Garranlahan. I beleive one of his cousins married Austin Raftery. I visited my dad's cousins family, Mick and Nellie Gormley about 10 years ago and Nellie had said that Austin and Kathleen, lived across "the field". I never met them, but I can ask my cousin, who grew up in that area.
Unfortunately Mick(d.1988, Nellie (d.1997), and Austin are deceased now.
I will ask around in my family and see what else I can come up with.
