McGann family

My ancestor William H. McGann was born approx. 1830 in Ireland. Then in 1870 he had a family (son, Oliver Goldsmith McGann) in Island Pond, Vermont, USA. I don't know where in Ireland he came from yet and really have no way to find out from my family, but this site came up in my Internet search. I'd appreciate any info about any McGann family members. Thank you.

Thank you.<p>Perhaps Oliver's name is a hint. The Oliver Goldsmith (1728 - 1774) was arguably born in Smith Hill outside Elphin. (Non Roscommon people say Longford) In any case Goldsmith lived part of his youth in Elphin and attended Bishop Hodson Grammar School which closed in Aug. '98 after 300 years. There was a Goldsmith near Elphin, probably a relative, in 1856 per Griffith's Valuation.

Elphin and Longford are all very near the old townland of Ballykilcline. Elphin is right 'over the hill' and Longford has a common boarder with Co. Roscommon. See the county maps on this fine L&R site.<p>: I am new to Irish research and do not find Elphin, Longford, or Roscommon in my Atlas. Are they near Northern Ireland? It sounds like Oliver Goldsmith would be a local Roscommon type name, then? It's starting to sound like my family might really have come from that area. Thanks again.<p>
