MCFADDEN, Drumkeeran, Inishmagrath, Co. Leitrim

Post by Julie Lund »

I have some ancestors by the name of McFadden that came from Co. Leitrim, Ireland, specifically Drumkeeran, Inishmagrath Parish. My g-grandmother, Rose Ann McFadden was born in 1871 and immigrated to NYC in 1886. She had a sister, Anna, b. 1874 who became a nun in Peekskill, NY and a brother, John, who became a NYC cop. Their parent's names were Michael McFadden and Catherine Gallagher McFadden. I have Anna's baptismal certificate and her sponsors in 1874 were Patrick McFadden and Brigid McFadden. Now the rub is that their names were spelled McPaddon on the certificate, but I think that was an error on the Parish priest's part, since my mother assures me she always heard the name was McFadden, and never heard the name McPaddon. I wonder if this was common, is there any chance that the name McFadden in Ireland was pronounced McPaddon?
Just wondering if anyone has a connection to these names.
Thanks,
Julie

Hi Julie,
Though I am no expert on the matter,I would vote
for McPadden as the real surname. I am very
familiar with Drumkeeran since my father was born
there and I have visited there on numerous
occasions. I also have in my possession a copy of
the Griffith's valuation for Innismagrath (1857).
The name McPadden is very common around Drumkeeran
while McFADDEN is a rarity in those parts.

Leitrim queries website. McFadden was pretty rare, with a couple in Drumahaire and a couple McFadian families in Killargue RC in the 1860s in my records at home. You should check out computer programs at the LDS (Mormon) Family History Centers, open to the general public. Other definite possibilities, since many names were "misspelled," are McPaddan, M'Padden McFadlin, Faddon, McFaddham, Padden, Patton, McPartlan, McPartland, McPharlin, McPharlan. Actually, you have enough information you should be able to "eyeball" your family pretty easily on LDS microfiched records for Co. Leitrim. Jean
