Is anyone familiar with the town of Creggs? I thought perhaps that this town has a Gaelic version - Creagh perhaps. I don't know Gaelic so I am unsure. Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks

Sort of. My grandfather and his family were from Creggs. His name was Patrick Joseph Timothy and was born in the late 1800s. His parents were Patrick Timothy and Bridget Mulligan. I haven't been able to make the connection between my grandfather's crossing of the Atlantic and Creggs yet. But I do know for certain he was from Creggs. Now I have to work on confirming everything. Are you from Creggs or familiar with it? It looks like it must be pretty small according to my maps. I guess the next step is to find out the names of the Catholic churches in Creggs. If you know anything please let me know.
Thanks. Beth
: Are you looking for someone in the Creggs Area?
: Steve Leonard

They came to the US
in 1842. Kilbegnet was the catholic parish then. I do have a list
of folks that lived in the area. I will check for Patrick Timothy
or Bridget Mulligan

Steve Leonard

I have a list called the
Valuation of Tenements for the parish of Kilbegnet (CIRCA 1847)
That shows a Patrick Timothy and a Bryan Timothy as
renters on land owned by Sir George Caulfield. The
village is called Derryhippoo which is right next door
to Creggs. I do not show a Bridget Mulligan but I do show
a Catherine Mulligan in Upper Island only about two miles
above Derryhippoo. Maybe a sister or cousin? All the land
in the area seems to be owned by Caulfield. These village's a small and very
old and mostly likly do not exist today. But they did back
then. Even though the area lies in Galway, any civl records
would be in Roscommon. The parish of Kilbegnet started keeping
records of births and marriages in 1836. Its not likely, they
have anything prior. One big help would be if we ever got
anyone to check the cemetary at Kilbegnet. Anyway, I hope this
might help you establish a starting point in your search.
If it does, being from Garraun would make us neighbors.

Steve Leonard
Thanks you for checking for me. I will have to see what I can do with this information. Unfortunately I don't have any current plans for an Ireland trip (2 babies keep me busy). If I make any progress I will let you know. I imagine my next step would be to contact the Catholic Church in Kilbegnet.:)
Thanks again

I would
suggest Mary Skelly at the County Roscommon Heritage Center,
Strokestown, Co. Roscommon. Phone: 078-33380. It takes about
six month or more to get a response but if you give them as much
information as you can in regards to birth or marriage dates that
would help them a great deal. Do you know the year they left? You
might also try Maureen Rendell also there. Here e-mail is mo@crfhs.iol.ie.
She's pretty good at looking things up.
Steve leonard
