Sir George Caufield?

Post by Beth Chambers »

Has anyone heard of Sir George Caulfield. He seems to have been the landlord of my g-g-g grandparents in the 1840-50s. He apparently was landlord over a very large parcel including a village called Derryhippoo which is right next door to Creggs in Roscommon. I would be curious to hear more about him. Was he kind or was he a tyrant, etc. Any info would be appreciated
Thanks

There is a strong possibility that a Caulfield was also our family's landlord in Oran Parish, NW of Roscommon town. I know the person in question owned Donamon Castle just across the River Suck in Co. Galway (now a seminary for the Divine Word Missionaries). Would you happen to know if Sr. George Caulfield owned Donamon Castle? If not, do you know any other large estates he held? This might help est. a connection. Thanks Pete D.

Thomas Caulfield got a 500 year lease on Donamon Castle in 1668 from Lord Kingston grandson of one of Cromwell's henchmen. There were two St. George Caulfields, the last died in 1896. The last Caulfield left Donamon in 1920. The Divine Word Missionaries have a good brochure covering the Castle. My grandfather was raised on the farm belonging to Caulfield, I made a trip there last summer to visit his remaining family and the Castle. The ghost said to have haunted the castle may be that of a bailiff of Caulfields who evicted a mother and her children from his land.
: There is a strong possibility that a Caulfield was also our family's landlord in Oran Parish, NW of Roscommon town. John, Thank you very much for the extremely informative post. I hope to vist the castle some day. I understand you can order customized Christmas Cards from the Divine Word Misionaries--sort of an irony for the descendants of the former landlord!
Pete D.

Check out the site at: http://ireland.iol.ie/~cuisle/page5.html Plus the linked pages. One of these notes that the Divine Word M. publish a magazine called "Word." My hunch is you could order the cards from there. Pete D.
