SHANLEY FAMILY

Post by Richard Kelly »

My grandmother was Josephine Arlene Shanley (1890-1943,
b Bangor ME d Bangor ME), daughter of Thomas Shanley
(1847-1900, b Lowell MA d Bangor ME) and Mary Josephine
Cullinan (1852-1936, b Lewiston ME d Bangor ME). Thomas
Shanley was the son of John Shanley (c1826-1864, b IRE
d Richmond VA as a prisoner of war) and Mary Donnelly
(c1823-1873, b IRE d Cambridge MA).
Thomas came to Maine in the 1870's, probably after his
mother died, to work as a stonecutter. His siblings
remained in the Boston area. Our family was still in
touch with them up until the 1920's. After that nothing.
Also I believe John Shanley had siblings in Lowell
specifically a brother James who was witness at his
wedding at St. Patrick's in 1846. John's father and
mother were Patrick and Ellen Shanley. It is unknown
whether they came to the US.
Does any of this ring a bell with anyone. I would very
much like to make contact with descendants of my
gr.gr.grandfather John Shanley, or descendants of his
siblings.
I do not even know the county of origin of my Shanleys,
but through other descendants I hope to make this
connection. It seems that the chance of them being
from Leitrim are better than not being from Leitrim.
Dick
