Cahalan-Roscommon

Post by Bob Cahalan »

My great grandfather -- James Cahalan -- was born in Co. Roscommon on July 6, 1835. He was baptised by John McDermott, parish priest in Loughglynn, Co. Rosommon. He was the third of 5 children born to William Cahalan and Sarah (Mangan) Cahalan.
James emigrated to the US in 1864 at the age of 29 and settled in Pennsylvania. In 1866 he married Mary, daughter of John and Bridget Kearney. They had six children: William, John, Mary Ellen, Sarah, James and Margaret.
I am hoping to locate information about my great, great grandfather, William Cahalan who was married to Sarah Mangan and the father of James, mentioned above. Also, we do not know the names of James' siblings.
I made my first trip to Ireland last year but wasn't able to spend time in Roscommon. My wife and I are hoping to return in the next year to further our research.
(User Above) wrote: : I'm also searching the Cahalins ( earlier spelling was Cahalan and also Cahelin ) My great grandfather was Patrick Cahalan born approx.1861 and married Maria Kenny. His father was Peter Cahelin born???? . Patrick lived in Corracommeen Roscommon in the parish of Tibohine. I have no information as yet with Peter Cahelin, although my grandfather once said that because they lived in such a small village all the Cahalins were related in one way or another. I don't know if any of this information is any good, let me know.
Also have you checked out the Leitrim-Roscommon homepage?

I too am looking for Cahalans in Roscommon. My GrGrGrandfather James Cahalan came from Roscommon. James had 2 brothers I know of, Thomas and Patrick. I will have to look up the related dates. I am interested in any info I can find and am very interested in trading info. I have a book written on this line of the family after they came to America. Email if interested.
: My great grandfather -- James Cahalan -- was born in Co. Roscommon on July 6, 1835. He was baptised by John McDermott, parish priest in Loughglynn, Co. Rosommon.
