1850's Emigrations to Canada !

Post by Richard »

I am seeking info on the names and destinations of the ships used by emigrants to Canada.
My mother is a Carrigan born in Canada, as was her father, however we believe her ancestors
were from County Leitrim-Roscommon. We are attempting to connect a departure from
Ireland to Eastern Canada in mid 1800's. She believes she descends from a Thomas Carrigan
born around 1820.
Thank you.
Parks Canada has published a book naming the people who died there during the summer of 1847 (A Register of Deceased Persons at Sea and on Grosse Ile in 1847).
It lists 13 deaths of people named Carrigan. None of those individuals was named Thomas. However, family members often traveled together and you might seek these ship manifests first. The ships on which these 13 Carrigans traveled were the Ann, Rankin, Virginius, Rose, and Sarah. All of them came from Liverpool.
The Virginius was one of the ships chartered by Denis Mahon of Strokestown, Roscommon to take his evictees to Canada. I don't know anything about the other ships.
Good luck.
Mary Lee Dunn
Many Irish including my Donovan family's immigrated to New Brunswick from Ireland as early as 1830's before immigrated to the States. E-mail me if interested and I'll send you some info for New Brunswick.

I've looked in web sites for Cox's in NB, but I keep running into dead-ends. My father's baby book contained the names of his GG Grandfather as John James Cox, G Grandfather John Cox, Grandfather James Patrick Cox and father Joesph William Cox. James Patrick was born about 1869 in St. John's NB, he married Cathrine Frontin, from Plympton, NS. They moved to Eastport, ME, where they had all there children. They are all buried at Hillside Cemetery, Eastport, ME, but James Patrick grave is Patrick J. Cox. Any help on directing me in the right direction, would be great.
Marted Cox
