When I found the sponsors for the Catholic baptisms of my grandmother TYRRELL's siblings, I only found two sponsors with the family surname.
Who would likely be selected to be sponsors in Roscommon in the 1860s and 1870s? Would a grandparent ever be the sponsor? I see NO OTHER TYRRELLs in Co Roscommon besides my family. Is it a logical asumption that these Godparents were some kind of a relative? Or were close friends just a likely to be selected?
Searching TYRRELL and O'Donnell in Kiltullagh Parish 1860- Today I Hope.

CATHOLIC GOD PARENTS - SPONSORS
Re: CATHOLIC GOD PARENTS - SPONSORS
The custom was that the grandparents were the godparents for the first child. In other words, one grandparent from each side. As for the rest of the children, both relatives and neighbors were godparents. In large families, siblings were often godparents.
