Patrick Nerney (McNierney, Neherney, Nurtney) b. Apr 1818

Patrick and Sisters Bridget and Ellen come to the US in about 1847. Settle in GREENBUSH (North Greenbush ) NY. Father's name possibly John. Patrick marries Thomas Gallagher's (from Ardcarn) eldest daugher Margaret in 1852 in N Greenbush. Thomas Boyd had already married #2 daughter Mary Gallagher in Roscommon. The Boyd's, Gallagher's, Nerney's, Higgins, Veasey's et al migrate to MADISON, Dane Country, Wisconsin in about 1857. Settle in the 4th Ward around W Main Street, West Doty Street. Go to St. Raphael's Church.

My GreatGrandfather James Edward Sullivan wrote his mother's maiden name as NURTNEY. The 1880 US Census (538 W Main Street, the family home until early 1900's) have variants on Nerney for the same family same household: McNierney, Nerne, Nierney, Nerherney, et al. Although a few times the family name appears as Narry, Narrey those variants appear to be a mistake. Nearney, Nermey, Nearny also appear.

Family legend is that Patrick was involved with the Republican Army, possibly a courier. All of the above families had their evictions from the townlands and migration to the US paid for by Enlish landlords. The Gallaghers may have been tumbled from Ardcarn in the 1830's, and resettled in Killlkulln.

With the exception of Thomas Boyd marrying Mary Gallagher, we don't have reason to believe that any of the famillies knew each other in Roscommon. But somehow they all settled in Greenbush NY and ended up near each other in Madison WI...all about the same time period. So at some point in time they did some planning together.

My cousin Justin Knaplund had some Nerney posts on the OLD Board back in 1998...his mother (my Aunt Virginia) and I are still vigorously pursuing leads, help, assistance.

THANKS!

Do you have any information on the townlands of origin of your Nerney relatives. My mother is a Nerney and I have a number of relatives in Roscommon and some information on the origins of the name. My mother is from Killavackan near Lanesborough.

You can e-mail direct on brian@barryb80.fsnet.co.uk or reply via the site to see if any other replies are generated.

Unfortunately, all we have is a Naturalization paper and an obit that both state Country Roscommon Ireland. The 1900 US Census has a birth of Apr 1818, so throwing out all of the false census ages and multiple Surnames (maybe Patrick didn't want to be found in the States.....) we' re left with
Patrick Nerney, Roman Catholic, born Apr 1818 Roscommon, married Margaret Gallagher of Ardcard in North Greenbush, NY in 1852. He's in the 1855 NY State Census for North Greenbush: Patrick Nermey. Married to Margaret, daugher Elizabeth just born.

The family moves to Madison Dane Wisconsin, and is in the 1860 US Census on Madison's West side. The kids go to school at St. Raphael's Church...all of the birth's and marriages are recorded there. The family homestead is 538 West Main Street, now an apartment building. Elizabeth Nerney married John Harrington and the moved in Next Door 536 West Main Street 9also an apartment today). Mary Jane Nierney b.1862 married James Edward Sullivan and they lived two block away at 335 West Doty Street (still there). That's my Great Grandfather. Phoebe Ann Nerney b. 1857 married John Colbert.

Patrick's father possibly JOHN, as this is the name of his first born son....infant death in 1853 N Greenbush NY.

Bridget 1826 and Ellen Nerney 1828 are possible sisters: METEOR Liverpool to New York arrive April 5, 1846. Bridget Nerney is present at the baptism of James Edward Sulllivan Sept 1859 Madison WI).

Patrick is a hotel / tavern keeper (Shamrock Inn on King Street). Dies in 1901.

Any idea on the names of the grandmother's parents, siblings?

It could certainly narrow down a parish by parish records search!!!

For all I know Patrick, Bridget, and Elllen had cousins/siblings that went to England instead of the US.

I hear you on the variants in spelling. Nurtney and McNerney are very prevalent on documents here in the US for this family.

Thanks!
