Margaret (nee MANNION) O'CONNELL

Post by Murph »

"Maggie" was born November 2, 1866 in Ballincool/Ballinacool townland, Civil Parish of Kilcorkey, Barony of Castlerea, County Roscommon, Ireland. She was the daughter of Margaret NOLAN Mannion and Thomas Mannion. Her siblings were Winifred Mannion (possibly CARROLL by marriage), Catherine Mannion McDONOUGH, Sarah Mannion SMITH, Anne Mannion O'HARA, and possibly Maria Mannion. Descendants believe that there may have been other female siblings. Maggie entered the United States in 1888. She married Bernard, "Barney," O'Connell, who had emigrated from Ireland in 1890. By 1900 they were living at 220 East 52nd St. in New york with their two oldest daughters. In 1914 Maggie and Barney became naturalized American citizens. At the time of the 1920 Census of the United States they were living at 728 E. 156th St., Bronx, New York. Their children were Mary ("May") who may have been married by 1920, Margaret, Ellen ("Nellie"), Agnes, Thomas J. ("Tommy"), and Ann. Maggie and Barney welcomed their immigrant relatives, including my mother, and helped them to adjust to their first days in America. The immigrants showed their appreciation by finding jobs and becoming self-sufficient as quickly as possible. New York City's Directory shows Maggie as the head of the household at the Bronx address in 1931. From that we can infer that Barney had passed on. Maggie lived on until January 4, 1954.
