I am searching for any info related to a John Andrew McDermott of Co. Roscommon in Ireland. He was born Nov. 16, 1830 (in Co. Roscommon)and eventually immigrated to the US through Norfolk, VA and settled in what is now West Virginia. I know he was in the U.S. by the 1850 census living with another family in Monroe Co., WV and I also believe he immigrated in the late 1840's. He did study to be a priest in Ireland but became a cooper here in the U.S. He had 2 brothers that made the journey from Ireland to the U.S. with him but one drowned in the harbor of Norfolk, the other moved West and was never heard from again. I am particularly interested in any info related to his city/town of origin in Roscommon and any info related to his siblings or parents.
Also, I will be in Ireland next month so any tips on how to research this info in Co. Roscommon would be helpful.
Thank you.

This is McDermott territory. Coolavin Demense, the McDermott family seat is located just outside Monasteraden, near Lough Gara. I usually locate this page by entering www.google.com and searching for Monasteraden. Good Luck.

It's in the old Protestant Church at the west end of the town and easily found. They charge a fee. Since you have a birthday, they should be able to find him and the parish, anf townland. Then pay that townland a visit and ask around. Note, some restrictions on travel currently in place because of foot & mouth disease (livestock).
