Location of cemeteries in County Leitrim
I am compiling a list of churches and cemeteries in County Leitrim.
Is anyone aware of any cemeteries that have been catalogued?
Does anyone know the names of the cemeteries listed on
LDS film1279295 Item 14 – “Inscriptions on tombstones in County Leitrim”?
Thank you.
John

Hi John,
can't help you directly, I'm afraid, but in case it's of any use, I'm working on a long term project on Cloonmorris Cemetery, in Bornacoola R.C. Parish (Mohill Civil Parish). Concentrating on the old cemetery only. If you think anything I've compiled might be of interest to you, please drop an email to tomcoughlan@imagine.ie. Bear in mind this is still very much a work in progress.

John,
The cemetaries for Inishmagrath/Killargue are:
Auchilochy,
St. Bridget's Church,
Killbride,
Newbridge,
Doobally,
Killargue.
There is also a graveyard at the Church of Ireland in Drumkeeran
In Ballenagera there are:
Graveyard at St. Hugh's Church
Fahy Graveyard
also:
The graveyard on Inch Island ?
Tarmon Abbey
John Blest photographed many of the above cemetaries recently and is working on formating them to make them available to drumkeeranfolk members and perhaps others.

Sharon,
Thank you for your reply.
A few queries:
In Inishmagrath/Killargue:
Auchilochy graveyard- where is it?
Killbride graveyard - where is it?
Newbridge graveyard - where is it?
Doobally graveyard - where is it?
In Ballenagera:
Graveyard at St. Hugh's Church. Are both the church and graveyard new?
Fahy Graveyard – what religion?
Inch Island – Does the island have another name? Where is it?
Tarmon Abbey – where is it?
Thanks for the help.
John

Hi John,
( I hope that I will be corrected by others who have more knowledge than I)
First, I suggest that you obtain a copy of the Ordnance Survey Map 26 if you don’t already have one.
This link (which is a school project) contains some great information about some of these places: http://www.dbo.ie/loughallen/index.htm
Auchilochy graveyard- Just outside Drumkeeran on the road north to Manor Hamilton, Sligo etc,. on the left side.
Killbride graveyard -(My favorite). This is on the southside of the Dowra Road between Drumkeeran and Dowra near Greyfield. There is a very pretty overgrown chapel which tradition says never had a roof so that it couldn't be a church and be prohibited. Supposedly built in one night to avoid detection. Many graves are located in this small area, only a small portion have markers.
Newbridge graveyard –I’m a little confused about this although I’ve been there ! The church is St. Columcille's, Newbridge. If I remember correctly, the graveyard is behind the old, deconsecrated church which is in private hands near the townlands of Derryvalannagher Glebe and Kilduff. The Newbridge Road departs from and runs east above the main Dowra Road.
Doobally graveyard - I don't know. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Doobally. The church is administered by the priest from Ballenaglera, perhaps it’s near Dowra ?
Graveyard at St. Hugh's Church: I'm not sure what date we would set as being new, and I'm afraid that I don't know the age. My mom & siblings were baptised there in the 1910s. I would think that it goes back to the 1800s.
Fahy Graveyard –This is also a Catholic Graveyard, but there is no church there. At Fahy Point on Lough Allen.
Inch Island – It's also called Inishmagrath Island, It is near the mouth of the Shannon and is apparently owned by a private party. There are all kinds of legends about how the bodies were brought out there. I'm very curious about it myself. I think it's usage predates Kilbride in the 1800s.
Tarmon Abbey St. Patricks – at Tarmon, this is right off the Drumkeeran-Drumshanbo Road, fairly close to the Roscommon border.
I hope this helps some.

Hello John,
Your list is impressive.
--Is Lavagh graveyard the same as Auchilochy graveyard ?
I've been to this graveyard, but it's not one connected to my family so I don't know much about it. The townland of Lavagh is across the road but it is possible that in earlier times the larger area was more generally known as Lavagh.
--Sorry, I was not very clear about Kilbride. You would certainly not miss it if you were driving on the Dowra Road from Drumkeeran. You are correct, it seems to be in Killadiskert Upper although I'm surprised that the main road (which has been there so long) doesn't divide the townlands, putting it in Derrinvoney. It sits exactly at the intersection of another road which goes down to Carrowlaur and up to Mahanagh.
It looks like the "Newbridge graveyard" (which is actually behind the older de-consecrated church) is located in Derryvalannagher Glebe, but the current church is probably in Derrintawy Glebe.
I am curious about this item from your list:
43,Ballinaglera (K),Drumreilly,Cornageeha church,RC18
Is this in Cornageeha towland ? I haven't heard or it or seen any references to it on maps. What information do you have ?
(This would be very close to my mother's birthplace in Eden).

John, nice list. I am interested in the Killargue cemeterys. Where do I get a copy of Map 15 referenced in your list? Are there inscriptions for these cemetaries anywhere, like the leitrim genealogy center, or can you get the book at a library? Check out my very first post history, you can see my line. Thanks, Tom Kelly
