Bernard McManus of County Roscommon

Post by Donald L. Hendrix »

I am searching for the parish in which Bernard Charles McManus was born in County Roscommon. Acording to the US federal census of 1880, he was born in 1847 (but another record suggests he was born in 1842) and immigrated to Australia at age 17. From Australia he moved to the US, entering San Francisco 13 May 1869. He settled in Oakland, California where he married Mary Murray. Bernard was a carpenter by trade and eventually the owner of a lumber mill in the city of Oakland.

Patrick McManus and Sarah Feeny may well be the parents of my Bernard Charles McManus, but I have done some additional digging and found a letter which suggests that his father's name was Charles. I have yet to determine his mother's name. I also have recently determined that he died 2 Jan 1929 and is buried in Old St. Mary's cemetery in Oakland, CA.

In the middle of the 19th century did the parishes in Roscommon record when a person left the parish? Since I know that the Bernard I am researching immigrated to Australia at age 17, if he was born in the Kiltomb and Camma parish 16 Jun 1843 there may be a record of his leaving this parish in the year 1860.
