I have just recently found out that through my great great grandmother's side of the family that I may be related to McDonough's.

My gg grandmother was Mary Cullen of Aghlin, Parish Oughteragh, Co. Leitrim. Born about 1795 in Aghlin. Died about 1863 in NYC, 4th Ward of Manhattan. Her brother was John Cullen, born 1801 in Aghlin and died 1878 in Lawrence, Mass. John was married to a Alice McDonough from Ireland.

Alice McDonough was born 1801 in Ireland and died 1885 in Lawrence, Mass. John and Alice and their eight children emigrated on April 10,1847 on the ship, Ellerslie, from Liverpool to NYC. Onboard the ship and listed right next to these Cullens was a Rose McDonough, age 18.

In the 1850 US Census for Lawrence, Mass living with this Cullen family was two more McDonough's:

Francis McDonough, age 32, Male, laborer, Born Ireland
Peter McDonough, age 25, Male, laborer, born Ireland (May have found Peter emigrating also on April 10, 1847 from Liverpool to NYC, but on the ship Cornelia)

Possibly related to Alice? I would think so.

Also in the 1850 US Census for Lawrence, Mass and living in the same house as the Cullens was the following:

John Mulvey, age 25, male, born Ireland
Rose Mulvey, age 21, female, born Ireland... (I am checking in to this but I believe this is the Rose McDonough from the ship Ellerslie)`

I had someone find all the McDonough's from Co. Leitrim from the Griffith's survey taken about 1857 and there were not alot. A fairly rare surname in that County. The one that interested me the most was the following:

John McDonough Parish: Kiltubbrid Towland: Mullaghycullen

This is only a few miles to the west of Aghlin. By the way, Aghlin is a very small townland about 5 miles west of Ballinamore or about 4 miles east of Drumshanbo.

If any of these McDonough's sound familiar I would appreciate hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Don McGovern
