Howevr augh usually means field and this may be a reference to the fields of Sheelin. Unfortunately I can't find Sheelins either. However there are Shiels which is related to Shields. The Shiels (O Seighin) were a prominent hereditary family of physicians in Donegal.
Pete Hanley

: Is it a Town Land?.If someone is from Aughnasheelin What Cival Parish are they from.
James, I have a sister-in-law who lived accross from the church at Aughnasheen. Her townland was Drummanny. The church is in the parish of Ballinmore and the same priests are used for the church on High St in town as that in Aughnasheelin.Don't know the civil parish. Another townland near the church is Drumrakin and Greaughrevabeg. Many of the villagers ended up emigrating in the late 1940's and 1950's to Rhode Island,NewYork and England. There are more natives abroard than the 800 souls or so left in Ballinamore,. The former vice president of Sinn Fein, John Joe McGuirl was from Ballinamore.Slan Seamus

I also have roots back to Aughnasheelin. My great grandmother came from there to Providence, RI in 1874, as did most of her brothers and sisters. Does any one remember the Cafferty family from Miskaun? Someone told me there is a monument there from the Fenian uprising, I believe. Anyone heard of it?

He was from the townland of Drumrackan just to the west of Aughnasheelin and she from the townland of Dernasmallan just to the west of Aughnasheelin.

Maybe you,re thinking of the famous Selton Hill Monument outside Mohill on route to Ballinamore.where several IRA Heros were killed fighting the Brits in the war for independance 1919 or so. I remember that site by the road. Quite a story inthe area.Good luck.Seamus

I did see that monument. I believe it is near Fenagh.
I have read of the terrible evictions in the 1880's. The story that touched me was the one about the Widow Prior's home. I understand some of the folks in Aughnasheelin would not let the authorities into her home and were arrested.
