My great grandfather on my mother's side was Patrick Banaghan.
His mother and father were Irish but I have no present idea where in
Ireland they came from, but I believe they came over to Scotland in the late 19th Century. Patrick lived in Dundee and worked on trawlers
and, later, coastal minesweepers, had a coal delivery business (using his daughters as debt collectors!), and a fruit and vegetable shop in
Dundee, Scotland. The family lived in an area of Dundee called "Tipperary" because it had many Irish immigrant families. I'm not sure if it reflected any Munster origins.
Patrick married a Sarah Horsborough from Edinburgh- known as my mother's Granny Banaghan. Their daughter, Alexina Banaghan (who died aged 89 in 1997), married Arthur Tilbury (who had rented and converted the fruit and veg shop into a shoe repairer's workshop). Their daughter, Patricia (named after Patrick) is my mother.
