I'm interested in any information about the Reddington (Redington)family in County Roscommon or the border with Co Galway. My part of the family would appear to hail from the Fuerty area near Roscommon Town in the early 1800's and came to England around the time of the potato famine.
Reddington is a rare name in Ireland so if you have come across it in your researches it is almost sure to be relevant. Any info, I'd be very grateful.

It is about the Thomas Redington of Galway who was Undersecretary to Lord Clarendon during the Famine years.
I have run into the name also in Rutland, VT in the later 1800s. An attorney by that name who became a judge lived there then.
There is a couple named Thomas and Margaret Reddington buried in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Burlington, VT
Good luck with your search.
Mary Lee Dunn

There is some difference of opinion as to the origins; some claiming descent from English military who came to Galway with Cromwell;others saying it is an anglicized version of a Celtic name. There is a REDDINGTON/REDINGTON message board on Rootsweb which has some info. on the different branches.
My own maternal gr gr grandmother was a REDDINGTON from Shanballymore, Galway (close to Dunmore and the Roscommon border).
