Location (?) Ardrahan Parish, Kilmacduagh Diocese

Post by Michael McGourty »

Can anyone assist me in determining the location of the Catholice Parish of Ardrahan, Diocese of Kilmacduagh in Galway. My grandmother Ellen (Nellie) Barrett was born in this area on Nov. 30, 1887. I am planning to visit Ireland in April, 1998 and would like to visit the area. Can anyone help me pinpoint the location or recommend a publication that will? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Michael

Ardrahan is in the diocese of Galway. If you look at a map of Ireland you will find the town of Kilmacdaugh just a few miles north west of a town called Gort. Gort is approx. halfway between Galway and Ennis in County Clare on the N18. Kilmacdaugh appears to be a small place...possibly only a village. Hope I haven't insulted anyone as I am only referring to a map! Hope you enjoy your visit.
An excellent reference is "Irish Records, Sources for Family and Local History" by James G. Ryan, PhD, ©1997 Ancestry Publishing. It is available from Ancestry's web site (www.ancestry.com) and Borders Books. It has all of the parish maps and record dates and availability by county.
Ardrahan has baptismal records beginning in 1839, and marriage records from 1850.
