He was on board a ship called "America", Liverpool - New York, 10 yrs old.
Arrival date NY 5 July 1851.
Named: McDermott, but they would not put it out fully with 333 passengers
He is with a man also called James (his father)? McDermotts listed in 1851 are:
Ann 32 wife?
James 35 father?
Margaret 4
Mary Ann 6,
Peter 23 relative of James Senior?
Peter 8,
William 12
Baby born at sea, gender not known, initial U
Both men are down as occupation Mill Wright
(I emailed Marcus O’Murchu to see if he knew what it meant). Marcus’ answer was:
what Mill Wright means? To wright is to work with iron hence "wrought iron"
When Marcus told me that James' father James worked in metal I knew he was the right one. James being a Blacksmith and Forgeman in London later in his life. Also James was 10 yrs old and the date of Arrival is 1851, James born 1841. Exactly right.
James returned to England and brought up 8 children in Plumstead Kent. He died on Canvey Island Essex aged 84 in 1925.
I am still looking for his marriage certificate, first child born 1871 so it would be before this. His wife's name was Isabella Susannah Barker. She also died on Canvey Island Essex aged 84, in 1930. She did use different forms of her name eg Isabel, susan.
If you are related to any of the above people, or you know where they went in US would you please contact me:
June Sanderson
Sanderson2000@btopenworld.com
