I've been trying to trace the origins of the name
"Oldfin". My great, great grandfather John Oldfin
immigrated to Kingston, Ontario, CAN sometime around
1830 from Ireland. His marriage certificate indicated
a mother and father, Mary Barrett and William Oldfin
from Ballycahane, Co. Limerick. When I wrote to the
Limmerick County archives, the responded that they had
no record of the Oldfin family name. They did suggest
that maybe the "Ballycahane" list on the marriage
certificate refered to a township rather than parish.
Does anyone have any idea on where a township of this
name may be located (I know the spelling is slightly
different.) Also, I'm looking for other possibilities
to search for records of the Oldfin family name. The
only other information I have is that the John Oldfin
who arrived in Canada was about 19 when he left Ireland.
Thanks in advance to any and all he offer ideas and
assistance.
