2002 Census at www.cso.ie/census

Post by Mike Lennon »

Yesterday, the preliminary results of the 2002 Census of Ireland was published. Overall, the population has increased by 291,000 to just over 3.9 million. Good news for Leitrim - an increase on the 1996 figures of 758 to 25,815. This was the first increase recorded since 1926, but Leitrim still remains the smallest of all the counties. Roscommon also recorded a increase of 1,828 to 53,803.
However, these increases mask the ongoing demographic trends of many decades. Leitrim and Roscommon are the only counties in the country to record a natural decrease (where deaths are greater than births). Migration (the inflow of people from other counties or from abroad)was greater than the natural decreases and thus accounted for the rise in the population numbers. The growth is very much centered on the major towns - Carrick-on-Shannon in the case of Leitrim, and Castlerea (due to the jail?)and the environs of Athlone in county Roscommon. The rural townlands continue to suffer population falls.
See www.cso.ie/census for all the details. Table 2 takes it down to local electoral division, so you can see how the area you are interested in is doing.

Thanks Mike! Information from the 2002 Census records is very much appreciated by those of us living far away from Roscommon - in my case, Australia! Thank you very much for giving us the Web Site for the latest Census Info. I am particularly interested in anything about Roscommon, be it in the 18th century or now! I only wish that I were in a position to return to the County for residence.....

: Yesterday, the preliminary results of the 2002 Census of Ireland was published.
