"From 1892 to 1924, more than 22 million immigrants, passengers, and crew members came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York"
So starts the text on the search engine for the ellisisland.org search engine.
Is anyone aware of any other source of pre 1892 immigration through Ellis Island ?
Michael
Ellis Island opened in January 1892 so there was no immigration thru there prior to that date. Before that time, immigrants came thru Castle Garden which was located on the south west tip of Manhattan. Castle Garden opened in 1855. Before that, immigrants just got off the ship at whatever port they landed. Microfilm of passenger lists are available at the National Archives & Records Admin. You can find most of them at the nearest Family History Center (LDS). (if they don't have them...they can order them).
