Emigratrion to South Africa

Post by Gordon Cummings »
My uncle Robert Cummings, born in Dromahair Co Leitrim 1886, emigrated to South Africa probably in his early 20s. Anyone know of websites with passenger ships to South Africa or websites in South Africa where I might be able to do some research? I have not been successful so far in finding any record or trace of him.
Gordon Cummings

Re: Emigratrion to South Africa - SA WEBSITE

Gordon,
Why not try the National Archive of South Africa’s website - http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm.
It has a search facility for the various provinces and just a cursory search of the “All Archives Repositories and National Registers of non-public records” on Robert Cummings turned up mortgages and estate papers. You will have to verify info and apply for further details through the website but with the favourable SA Rand exchange rate this shouldn’t work out to be too expensive – Current exchange for €1 is ZAR 10.49.
I hope this helps
Regards
Frank Pretorius
frankang_famsearch@yahoo.co.uk
