Re: search for mulleedy ancestry
Eileen, you are not giving yourself the best chance of being helped. You have told us nothing about what you know already (eg, any firstnames, spouse names, dates, ages, districts, etc.), yet we assume you must know sufficient to have travelled to Ireland to begin a search.
There are Mulleady records in both the IGI and the VRI. Roscommon is a hot spot, but there are also examples in Westmeath, Dublin and West Moate.
Historically, the Gaelic surname Ó Maoiléidigh was variously anglicised O Mulledy, O Mulleadie, O Maledy, O Meledy, Mulleady, Melledy, Meleady, Meledy, Melody and Malady. The name means 'descendant of Maoléidigh' (armoured chief). In the 16th century, the surname was peculiar to the midlands, especially Westmeath and Offaly, where the family was said to be 'highly respectable'. Earlier, there was a family of that name in Corcumroe, Co. Clare.
