My great grand father built his own house in 1909 and as I seem to recall this was because that in this year an Act was passed that gave people far greater security of tenure over their holdings and removed the fear that if they improved a holding they would either be thrown out or have the rent dou...

Anne I also research Nerneys and still have Nerney relatives in Roscommon. From what I have learnt there are 2 branches of the Nerneys in Roscommon. The larger are those from in and around Elphin where they are associated with the church there, (Nerney is an anglicised version of Mac An Ereneagh - e...

These maps are fascinating, I bought two from the commercial site showing the townlands of my forebears. If you have family data from the Griffiths Valuation and can view the maps showing that relate to Griffiths you would be able to identify houses to individuals. Griffiths was based on these first...

Paul I also have found this very interesting. I research (amongst others) Nerneys (or Mac An Airchinnich) from the Slieve Bawn/ Curraghroe district. Can you let me have the details of where the quote you have supplied was obtained from - presumably HOI is the History of Ireland, is this accessible o...

Bernie

My grandmother was born in Gortgallen - adjacent to Cloontuskert. She was a Beirne but had Mullooley and Fallon relations from this area. I would be most interested to correspond with you as I also have relations who went from this area to Manchester at the time you mentioned.

RJ Do you have any information on the townlands of origin of your Nerney relatives. My mother is a Nerney and I have a number of relatives in Roscommon and some information on the origins of the name. My mother is from Killavackan near Lanesborough. You can e-mail direct on brian@barryb80.fsnet.co.u...
